The 1st National University Student Competition on Application, Innovation and Development in SDN, hosted by the Internet Innovation Union of Science & Technology Development Centre of Ministry of Education, ended in South China University of Technology, August 28th. USTC team won the first prize and the Innovation Award with the proposal “QoS of Virtual Machine Traffic in Cloud Datacenter”.

The event consists of the preliminary contest and the final contest, lasting for 8 months. More than 200 teams from over 80 institutes participated in the contest. The final contest contains two stages, the proposal defense and a competition on theoretical knowledge. 28 proposals were presented in the defense stage, covering topics of multimedia, network security, traffic shaping, datacenter, and traffic balancing. The contest evaluates skills and teamwork of participants.
The USTC team consists of three team members, Shuo Wang, Jun Zhang, and Hua Xu, leaded by Huanjie Zhang. Their proposal “QoS of Virtual Machine Traffic in Cloud Datacenter” solves a real problem in the Hanhaixingyun cloud platform. It leverages software-defined networking (SDN) technologies to classify, control, and schedule the traffic among virtual machines, aiming to provide guarantee of the QoS of high-priority services. The team got the highest score in the proposal defense.
