On April 27th - 29th, Dr. Yang Qiang, the director of Huawei’s Noah's Ark Lab and the professor of computer science in Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, visited USTC accompanied with the scientists of Noah's Ark Lab, Yang Bohai and Dai Wenyuan. Dr. Yang, meanwhile, carried out academic exchanges with USTC's robotics laboratory in depth, discussed detailedly the scheme of collaborative research, and reported "User Modeling in Social Media and Big Data" in simple terms. In the midst of his visit, Chen Huaping (executive president of School of computer science and technology), Zhu Jiping (deputy director of technology department), and Chen Enhong (vice president of School of computer science and technology) met with Dr. Yang and his party.

Dr. Yang is IEEE / AAAI / IAPR / AAAS Fellow and ACM Distinguished Scientist. He led the HKUST team making a large number of leading international researches in the field of big data. In 2012, Dr. Yang turned his focus to the industrialization of big data, and built Noah's Ark laboratory with Huawei jointly. Currently, Noah's Ark has more than 30 full-time researchers and 20 full-time engineers. It has been a leading team of the world's attention in the big data applications. Dr. Yang introduced that there were a lot of basic works, which had been done in Noah's Ark, including user modeling, automatic recommendation, and natural language understanding etc.. In order to meet the social demand of the current era of big data, it began to enter the result-conversion phase using actual mobile communications technology and equipment.

In the exchange, Dr. Yang also introduced the robot studies in Noah's Ark laboratory. And Prof. Cheng Xiaoping presented latest developments of Ke Jia to the guests. In this project, USTC's robot team has initially realized the independent research, development of the software, and hardware platform of the intelligent service robot based on the "open intelligent" technology system. It proves that "open intelligent" technology of Ke Jia is pretty helpful for the performance of intelligent robots in the related experiments of the largest scale. It should be noted that Ke Jia frequently won in the field of artificial intelligence and became one could directly improve the performance using kinds of net resource. On the basis of the exchange, the two sides carried out a thematic discussion on specific cooperation projects and programs, where formed a number of consensus.

In the afternoon of the 28th, Dr. Yang gradually reported the demand of the era of big data, as well as a series of research projects, progress and achievements of Huawei’s Noah's Ark Laboratory in simple terms. Further, Dr. Yang introduced a cute micro-Bo robot, named "Xiao Nuo", which can automatically extract the forefront of science and technology report, release micro-Bo by the way of network opinion leaders, and do a simple comment on other's microblogging. The entire context was wonderful and humorous, which aroused great interests of teachers and students here.
